Platform for the People

Empowering our people.  Respecting our culture.  Building our future.

A vote for Tom Chee is a vote for three outcomes: 1) we will preserve our land, language, and culture, 2) we will make our government work for our people, and 3) we will create jobs.  In short, we will advance three initiatives:

  • Land, Language, and Culture Preservation Project

  • Government Effectiveness Campaign

  • Navajo Jobs Plan

Land, Language and Culture.  We must preserve our land, language, and culture.  This is what makes us Navajo.  This is what makes us special.  This is what ensures that we, as a people, will continue to be the largest indigenous community in the United States.

But we cannot take anything for granted.  Our Diné Hataałii need to practice their songs and chants, and we need to preserve this intellectual property for generations to come.  Our youth need to embrace and utilize our Navajo language.  Our land needs to be preserved and, simultaneously, utilized for our economic future.

Government Effectiveness.  The problem is not our Navajo governmental workers.  The problem is that those who choose to commit their lives for the betterment of the Navajo people by working for the Navajo government are constrained by rules, practices, and conditioning that prevents them from accomplishing the work that they would love to do.

We all want to see better jobs, infrastructure, and homes, but sometimes we feel penalized if we show the courage to do the right thing.  This type of courage to accomplish work for the people will be rewarded, not penalized.  If anyone who works for Navajo government has a good idea on how to do their job better, we will listen and we will implement it.  If there are structural problems preventing our offices from getting the work done, we will collaborate with the Navajo Nation Council and we will change it.  If someone identifies an opportunity that simply needs a little creativity, we will embrace it.

Navajo Jobs Plan.  Finally, it’s all about jobs.  Doing valued work gives our lives meaning.  At birth our Creator has given us each special skills and abilities and then a lifetime to learn what they are and then to reflect those gifts back on society.  This starts in our homes with the teaching of our language and the care of our children.  It then moves to our schools with the continued understanding of our language and then the opportunity for education.

As we discover our gifts, Navajo must do a much better job of connecting those gifts to jobs and occupations.

It is for this reason that I embrace the Navajo Jobs Plan and its specific projects and initiatives.
